    Other General Questions

    • Writing Timetables
    • Running PC-Rail on a Apple Mac
    • Virus program reporting Virus in dowloaded file.

Simulation is producing (VFP) system errors (e.g. VFP 1705).

First thing to try is to download the latest simulation file and re-install using the new downloaded file. Many errors are simply fixed this way as sometimes files are corrupted when the download is disrupted or using an older version.

Once you've tried that but can't get your simulation to run at all it may be caused by windows not allowing the program to access the simulation's data files. This is usually due to Window's "User Access Control".

      Try the following:

      • Run the program as an administrator: right-click on the program icon and select "Run as administrator".
      • Check the "properties" of the folder containing the simulation files. They should NOT be set to "Read only".
      • If neither of these solves the problem, your virus protection software may be preventing files being accessed.

If the first one solves the problem it you can change settings to cause the program to always be run with administrator priveleges: right click on the program icon, click on "Properties", open the "Compatibility" tab.

If the errors occur during a session it may be due to a programme fault. Our software is extensively tested before release, but if you do find a program bug, please report it to us for investigation.
We may ask you to send additional information using the Diagnostics program included with our software or you may want to use this in anycase to send us the diagnostic file produced. However, please check through all other options first as we do receive files from older versions and would be solved simply by downloading and installing the latest versions. These are found under upgrades.

My computer crashed and now PC-Rail won't start up.

This is usually due to files being corrupted after an abnormal closedown. When you try to start PC-Rail you may System Errors reported (often error 15).
The solution is simple - reinstall the simulation software, by again running the installation file which you downloaded from our website. If you can't find this, download it again then run it. You will not lose your existing registration details by doing this.

The registration details I have for my simulation(s) no longer work, or I have Lost/Mislaid the codes.

      Please check the following :

      (a) make sure you have a recent version of the software, <upgrade list> and

      (b) check your reg details by logging on to your account. <www.pcrail.co.uk/>

How long are the timetables supplied as standard with the PC-Rail simulations?

Details are given on the PC-Rail web site under each product. Just follow the links to the page for the simulation which interests you. e.g. for Birmingham New Street http://www.pcrail.co.uk/index.php?pts=simulation&code=NS this shows the standard timetable as containing 463 trains, running for 8 hours and based on a weekday in 2012.

I would like to write my own timetable for PC-Rail - can you offer any advice?

Yes, please click here for our guide to Writing & Submitting Timetables for PC-Rail Simulations.

Can I run PC-Rail on an Apple Mac?

We have many users who have successfully done this. More information can be found at http://store.apple.com/uk/browse/guide/windows

Another solution, recommended by one of our customers, is "Crossover" (http://www.codeweavers.com/products/) a "PC emulator" - i.e., Mac software with no actual Windows installed at all.

There is also a third party application 'Parallels' available at http://www.parallels.com/uk/

My Anti Virus Program is reporting that the downloaded file contains a virus.

Some antivirus programs (e.g. McAfee) occasionally incorrectly report our download files as suspect. Please be assured that they are quite safe and have been thoroughly scanned before being upload to our web site.

If your antivirus program does give such "false positives" you should contact the supplier of the program and request them to correct the matter.
